It can alert a group or just one person. Most clocks make sounds like beeps or buzzing. Some use light or shaking to wake you.

You can turn them off with a button. Some clocks turn themselves off if you do not touch them.

Old clocks were very different. A classic mechanical clock uses a spring. This spring powers gears to move a hammer. The hammer hits bells to make a loud ring.

Some modern clocks are digital. They can play music or even talk. Some play sounds from nature, like rain or the sea.

Many devices have alarms today. Mobile phones and computers have them built in. Some special clocks track your sleep. They use sensors to see how you sleep. They try to wake you during light sleep. This helps you feel less tired when you wake up. People who cannot hear well use light alarms. They might use bright flashing lights instead.
