A year is the time it takes for Earth to orbit the Sun. To orbit means to travel in a path around something.

This trip takes about 365 days. Because Earth is tilted, this trip brings the seasons. We see spring, summer, autumn, and winter. These seasons change the weather and the daylight. In some warm places, people track wet and dry seasons instead.

Other planets have years too. A year on Mars lasts about 1.88 Earth years. We use calendars to keep track of time. The Gregorian calendar is the most common one. It uses leap years to stay accurate. A leap year has 366 days instead of 365. This happens every four years to help the calendar match the Earth's trip.

People also use the word year for other things. A fiscal year is a 12-month period for business. An academic year is the time students spend in school. In Nepal, the school year starts on July 15. In the United States, many schools have about 180 days of teaching.
