The idea of a month comes from the Moon. The Moon goes through a cycle of phases. This is called a synodic month. It is the time between one new moon and the next. One synodic month lasts about 29.53 days. This cycle is the basis for many calendars today.

Most people use the Gregorian calendar. This calendar divides the year into 12 months. These months have between 28 and 31 days. February is the only month that changes. It has 28 days most of the time. During a leap year, it has 29 days.

You can use your hand to remember month lengths. Make a fist. The knuckles are the 31-day months. The spaces between them are the 30-day months. This pattern is like a musical keyboard. The wide white keys are the 31-day months. The narrow black keys are the 30-day months. Some people also use the phrase "Thirty days hath September" to help them remember.
