Most people use weeks to plan their lives. We use them to set work days and rest days. Some people call the end of the week the weekend. In some places, people have special weeks for a cause. For example, Canada has National Family Week.

Different cultures used different lengths of time long ago. Ancient Egypt used ten days. The Romans once used eight days. Today, most of the world uses the seven-day week.

Where did the seven-day week come from? It may have started with the Babylonians. They saw seven special objects in the sky. These were the Sun, the Moon, and five planets.

Later, the Romans named days after these planets and gods. They used names like Luna for the Moon. In English, we use names like Monday. This means "moon day." We also use names like Sunday for the Sun. Most people start their week on Sunday or Monday.
