physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A week is a way to measure time that lasts exactly seven days. It is a standard period used between a single day and a full month. Most people in the world use weeks to organize their lives. We use them to plan work days, rest days, and holy days. Some people call the end of the week the weekend. Certain weeks are even set aside for special reasons. For example, Japan and China have a special time called Golden Week.

It makes up about 23% of an average month. In a standard year, there are just over 52 weeks. A year with 365 days has 52 weeks and one extra day.

History shows that different cultures used different lengths of time. Ancient Egypt used ten-day weeks. The Etruscans and early Romans used eight-day weeks. In modern West Africa, some people use four or five-day weeks between market days. The seven-day week may have started with the Babylonians. They saw seven special objects in the sky. These were the Sun, the Moon, and five planets.

Later, the Romans used a week named after planets and gods. This was called an astrological week. In AD 321, Emperor Constantine the Great made the seven-day week official. He even made Sunday a public holiday. Over time, this merged with the Jewish seven-day week. The Jewish week focuses on the Sabbath on Saturday. Many Christians observe Sunday to honor the resurrection of Jesus. Muslims observe a sacred day of worship on Friday.
