For many people, it is a time for rest or special traditions. In Judaism, the seventh day is called Shabbat or the Sabbath. This holy time begins at sundown on Friday and lasts until nightfall on Saturday. It is a day meant for resting. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, Saturday is a day to honor the Mother of God. People also offer prayers for those who have died on this day.

This is because it is remembered that Jesus lay in a tomb on a Saturday.

Many names for Saturday come from the stars and ancient gods. The Romans named the day "Saturn's Day" for their god, Saturn.

They believed the planet Saturn controlled the first hour of that day. This idea came from writers like Vettius Valens. Over time, the name moved into West Germanic languages. In Old English, the day was called Sæterndæġ. Some people thought this name came from a god named Sætere. Others thought it might be linked to the god Loki. Today, the name still connects us to the planet Saturn.

Different cultures have very different ways of naming this day. In Japan and Korea, the word for Saturday means "earth day." This is because the planet Saturn is linked to the element of earth. In Thailand, Saturday is linked to the color purple. In India, many call it Shani, named after the Hindu god Shani. In Scandinavia, the name comes from an old word for a bath. This is because Vikings used Saturdays to bathe. This same root is found in the Finnish and Estonian names for the day.

Saturday also has special roles in how countries work. In Australia and New Zealand, elections are held on Saturdays. In the U.S. state of Louisiana, it is a preferred day for voting too. In Nepal, Saturday is the last day of the week. It is also the only official weekly holiday there. In Israel, it is the official day of rest. This means government offices and most businesses are closed. Even the international standard, ISO 8601, calls Saturday the sixth day of the week.

We see Saturday in many parts of our daily lives. It is often a time for fun and parties. Many clubs and restaurants stay open late on Saturday nights. In the United States, Saturday night is a famous time for comedy shows. One very famous show is called Saturday Night Live. We also hear the name in many songs and movies. Some people even use the rhyme "Saturday's child works hard for a living." Whether it is for work or play, Saturday is a big part of our world.
