Many people use this day to celebrate or follow traditions. It is a day that connects many different cultures and beliefs.

Many names for this day come from ancient gods of thunder. In Old English, the name came from a god named Thunor. This is very similar to the Germanic god Thor. In many Romance languages, the day is named after Jupiter. Jupiter was the Roman god of the sky and thunder. For example, Spanish speakers call it jueves. In Italian, the word is giovedì.

In parts of India, the day has a religious meaning. The name often refers to Bṛhaspati, who is a guru or teacher to the gods. This day is a time to honor the deity Vishnu and his many forms. People might pray or fast to show their respect. In Thailand, Thursday is known as Teacher's Day. Students may hold ceremonies to show honor to their teachers. The color orange is also linked to this day in Thailand.

Different religions have their own ways of observing Thursday. In the Druze faith, people gather at a prayer house on Thursday evenings. They meet to talk about local issues and study holy books.
