The Hindu calendar, also called the Panchanga, is a special way to track time.

It is used by many people in India and Southeast Asia. People use it to find the right days for festivals. It also helps them know when to perform rituals for crops. This calendar is very important for Hindu astrology and the zodiac system. It helps people observe special days for gods or times for fasting, like Ekadashi.

This system is called a lunisolar calendar because it uses the sun and the moon. A lunar year has about 354 days. A solar year has about 365 days. These two numbers do not match up perfectly. To fix this, the calendar adds an extra full month every 32 or 33 months. This is called an intercalary month. Adding this month keeps festivals in the correct season. This method is similar to the ancient Babylonian and Hebrew calendars.

History shows that these timekeeping methods go back to Vedic times.

Ancient scholars used a field of study called Jyotisha to track the stars. They wanted to find the exact time for religious rituals. Some historians say a calendar called the Saptarsi began as early as 6676 BCE. The Vikram Samvat calendar started in 57 BCE and is named after King Vikramaditya. This version is often used in Nepal and North India.

Many smart scholars wrote books to make these calculations more accurate.

In the 5th century, a scholar named Aryabhata wrote the Aryabhatiya. Other important texts include the Panca Siddhantika by Varahamihira. These books helped people track the Sun, the Moon, and the planets. These scholars were so good at math they even calculated the size of the Earth. Their results were very close to the real size we know today. They even tried to measure time with incredible tiny precision.

Today, different regions use different versions of the calendar. In South India, the Tamil and Malayalam calendars focus more on the sun. In Bali, Indonesia, people use the Balinese saka calendar.

This system is linked to a legend about a sage named Aji Saka. Even though there are many regional styles, they all share deep roots. India even has a modern national calendar that combines these systems. This helps keep the ancient traditions alive in the modern world.
