Many people follow the Gregorian calendar today. For them, the new year starts on January 1. This date was once used in the old Roman and Julian calendars too. In the past, some places in Western Europe used different start dates. They might have celebrated on March 1 or even December 25. Most countries moved to the January 1 date when they adopted the Gregorian system. This helps everyone stay on the same schedule for civil life.

Some cultures use a lunisolar calendar to find their new year. This means they look at the moon and the sun together. The Chinese New Year is a very important celebration. It is also called the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year. It happens on the new moon of the first lunar month. This date can fall anywhere between January 21 and February 21. Years are often marked by animals in a 60-year cycle.

Other traditions happen during the spring when the weather changes. The Iranian New Year is called Nowruz. It begins at the exact moment of the spring equinox. This usually happens on March 20 or March 21. In Bali, the New Year is called Nyepi. It is a unique day of silence and fasting. People use this time for quiet self-reflection. Even the airport in Bali closes for this special day.

India has many different traditional calendars with many start days. Some celebrations happen in March or April. For example, the Tamil New Year is called Puthandu. In South India, people decorate their homes with beautiful patterns called kolams. In Nepal, the new year follows the Bikram Sambat calendar. It is celebrated in mid-April. These many different ways of counting time show how diverse our world is.
