A public holiday is a special day set by law. Most people use these days to stop working. These breaks are also called statutory or legal holidays. They can be national holidays for a whole country. They can also be civic holidays for a state or province.

These days help people coordinate their free time. It is much easier to plan social events when everyone is off. However, having many people off at once can cause overcrowding. This can happen on transport systems or in leisure spots.

Holidays serve a very important role in building a nation. They act as symbols that help people feel united. Some thinkers say holidays are like sites of memory. They help a country remember important historical events. They can also honor specific national heroes. In South Africa, new holidays were made after Apartheid. These were meant to celebrate a new national identity. This identity is often called the rainbow nation.

Rules for holidays change depending on where you live. In the United Kingdom, people often call them bank holidays. This term comes from laws passed in the late 19th century. These laws helped extend labor rights to more citizens. In Italy, the parliament sets the public holidays. Most of these apply to the whole country. Some holidays are religious, while others are local. For example, Christmas in Italy starts on 8 December. It ends on 6 January with the Epiphany.

Different countries have different numbers of days off each year. Nepal has the highest number with 36 public holidays. Even with so many, they still work six days a week. India is second with 21 national holidays. Colombia and the Philippines both have 18 holidays. Japan, China, and Hong Kong each have 17. In New Zealand, the law sets exactly 12 paid holidays. If a worker must work on that day, they get extra pay. They also get another day off later.

Sometimes, holidays can be a subject of debate. Some people may disagree with what a holiday celebrates. In the United States, people sometimes protest Columbus Day. They may ask to change it to Indigenous People's Day. In Australia, Australia Day marks a fleet arriving in 1788. Some people call it 'Invasion Day' because of its history. They feel the date represents oppression of local people. Because of this, some events have moved to different dates.
