Most countries today use the Gregorian calendar system. In this system, the New Year occurs on January 1. This date is often called New Year's Day. It is preceded by New Year's Eve. This January 1 date was used in the original Julian calendar. It was also the start of the Roman calendar after 153 BC. Many national civil calendars adopted this fixed date when they moved to the Gregorian system.

Religious traditions sometimes differ from civil calendars. In the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar, there is no specific observance for the New Year. Instead, January 1 is a religious holiday known as the feast of the Circumcision of Jesus. This occurs seven days after his birth. Some Orthodox nations, like Greece and Bulgaria, follow the revised Julian calendar. They observe both civil and religious holidays on January 1. Other nations, such as Russia and Serbia, use the Julian calendar for religious feasts. In these places, religious celebrations occur on January 14 of the Gregorian calendar.

Many cultures use lunisolar calendars to track time. A lunisolar calendar counts months based on lunations, or moon cycles. However, it must also account for the solar year. To stay in sync with the seasons, these calendars restart on a specific new moon. The Chinese New Year is a major example. It is also called the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year. It falls on the new moon of the first lunar month. This date can land anywhere between January 21 and February 21.

In the Chinese tradition, years follow a complex cycle. This cycle uses twelve Earthly Branches, which are represented by animals. It also uses ten Heavenly Stems, which correspond to five elements. This combination creates a 60-year cycle. Other lunisolar traditions include the Korean Seollal. Koreans celebrate the Lunar New Year to welcome good luck. They also use it to ward off bad spirits. The Vietnamese celebrate Tết Nguyên Đán, which often falls on the same day as the Chinese New Year.

Some New Year celebrations are tied to the spring equinox. The Iranian New Year is called Nowruz. It begins at the exact moment of the northward equinox. This usually happens on March 20 or March 21. This tradition is also known as Nauryz in Central Asian countries. In Bali, the New Year is called Nyepi. It is based on the Saka Calendar. Nyepi is a day of silence, fasting, and meditation. It lasts from 6 am until 6 am the next day. During Nyepi, the airport in Bali closes. Only emergency vehicles and women in labor are allowed to move.

India has many traditional calendars with many different start dates. In the south, the Tamil New Year is called Puthandu. It occurs in April. People decorate their house entrances with elaborate patterns called kolams. The Bengali New Year, or Pôhela Boishakh, is also celebrated in April. In Nepal, the official calendar is the Bikram Sambat. The Nepali New Year falls between April 12 and April 15. These diverse systems show how humans connect time to nature and faith.
