In many places, Saturday is a time for rest. For Jewish people, the seventh day is called Shabbat. It is a day to rest from sunset on Friday until Saturday night. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, people pray for the dead on this day. They also honor the Mother of God.

Different cultures have special ways to use Saturday. In Scandinavia, the name comes from an old word for a bath. This is because Vikings liked to bathe on Saturdays. In New Zealand, the Māori name means "washing-day." This is because people used the day to wash clothes for church. In Thailand, the color for Saturday is purple. In Japan and Korea, the name means "earth day." This is because the planet Saturn is linked to earth. In some places, like Australia and New Zealand, people vote on Saturdays. In Nepal, it is the only official holiday each week.
