The name Sunday means "day of the sun." This name comes from a very old way of naming days. Long ago, people assigned each day to a planet. The Sun was one of these planets.

Different people see Sunday in different ways. Many Christians call it the "Lord's Day." They use it for worship and rest. They remember the resurrection of Jesus on this day. In some places, like the United States, Sunday is the first day of the week. In other places, it is the last day.

Some languages use the name to show its place. In Arabic, the word for Sunday means "the first." In Hebrew, it also means "first." In many Slavic languages, the names mean "no work." This shows it is a day for resting. In the Persian calendar, Sunday is the second day. This is because they start counting from zero. In the ISO system, Sunday is the seventh day.
