A month is a unit of time used in calendars to help us track the passing days. The idea of a month comes from the Moon and its natural cycles. These cycles are called lunations, or synodic months. A synodic month is the time between two of the same Moon phases, like two full moons. This takes about 29.53 days to complete. Because of this, there are about 12.37 lunar months in one Earth year.

Using the Moon to track time is a very old habit. Researchers found tally sticks from the Paleolithic age that show people counted days using Moon phases.

Astronomy shows us that there are different ways to measure a month. A sidereal month is the time it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth once. This lasts about 27.32 days. A synodic month is longer because the Earth is also moving around the Sun. The Moon has to travel a bit extra to reach the same position relative to the Sun. There is also an anomalistic month, which measures the time between perigees. Perigee is the point when the Moon is closest to the Earth. This month lasts about 27.55 days on average.

Many of our modern calendar rules come from the Roman system. The Roman calendar was changed several times by leaders. One important version was the Julian calendar, named after Julius Caesar. Another was the Augustan calendar, named after Augustus. Today, most people use the Gregorian calendar. This calendar has 12 months that last between 28 and 31 days. The names of the months come from Latin names and important Roman events. For example, September, October, November, and December were originally the seventh through tenth months. Their names come from Latin numbers for seven, eight, nine, and ten.

In the Gregorian calendar, the months have different lengths. January, March, May, July, August, October, and December all have 31 days. April, June, September, and November have 30 days. February is the only month that changes its length. It usually has 28 days, but it has 29 days during a leap year. This helps keep our calendar in line with the seasons. Some calendars, like the Islamic calendar, are purely lunar. This means they only use lunar months and do not follow the solar year. An Islamic year is about 11 days shorter than a solar year.

It can be hard to remember how many days are in each month. You can use your hand as a tool to help you. If you make a fist, the knuckles represent the 31-day months. The spaces between your knuckles represent the 30-day months. This pattern is also like a musical keyboard. The wide white keys are like the 31-day months. The narrow black keys are like the 30-day months.

People even use the rhyme "Thirty days hath September" to help them learn. These tools make the math of time much easier to grasp.
