In the North, February is the end of winter. In the South, it is the end of summer. The name comes from a Latin word. It means "purification." Long ago, Romans held a ritual to clean things.

The month's birthstone is the amethyst. This purple gem stands for being humble and wise. You might also see violets or irises. These are the flowers for this month.

February is a very unique month. It is the only month that can pass without a full moon. It can also have exactly four full weeks. This happens when the month starts on a Monday or a Thursday. In some places, people call it the "mud month." In Finland, they call it the "month of the pearl." This is because melting snow looks like ice pearls.
