It tracks the moon to name the months. It also tracks the sun to follow the seasons. This helps the months stay in the right place each year.

A solar year is about 365 days long. A lunar month is about 29 days long. Twelve moon cycles do not fill a whole solar year. Because of this, most years have twelve months. But every two or three years, a year gets an extra month. This is called an intercalary month, or a leap month.

Many people use these calendars. The Chinese, Hebrew, and Hindu cultures use them. The Chinese calendar is also called an agricultural calendar. This is because it helps people know when to farm. It also tracks big holidays. These include the Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival. Some calendars use a special 19-year cycle. This is called a Metonic cycle. It helps keep the moon and sun in step.
