It uses a cycle of twelve years. Each year belongs to a specific animal. These animals are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.

Many people believe these animals show personality traits. People use the zodiac to think about jobs or marriage. It is also used to look at luck. This system is popular in many places. It is found in China, Japan, and South Korea. It is also in places like Australia and Germany.

One famous story is called "The Great Race."

In this tale, a Jade Emperor held a contest. Animals had to cross a river to win. The Rat won first place. The Rat was smart and rode on the Ox. The Ox came in second place. The Pig was the very last animal to arrive. Some stories say the Cat missed the race. This is why cats and rats often fight.

This system became official during the Han Dynasty. It helps people group themselves into symbolic sets. It is a big part of many cultures.
