Scientists look at how animals live and grow. They study how animals act and how they fit into nature. This study includes living animals and those that are extinct.

People have watched animals for a long time. Ancient people made cave paintings of horses and deer. Long ago, a man named Aristotle began to study them. He grouped animals into two sets. He looked at animals with blood and those without blood. Later, a man named Conrad Gessner wrote a huge book about animals.

Today, zoology uses many tools. Scientists use cell theory to understand life. This is the idea that all living things are made of cells.

They also use DNA to see how animals are related. This helps them group animals by their family trees. We call this taxonomy. Scientists use taxonomy to give every animal a special name. This helps us study and protect all life on Earth.
