The Chinese zodiac is a special way to group years into a cycle.

This system uses a repeating twelve-year cycle to label time. Each year in the cycle is given a specific animal. People also believe these animals represent certain personality traits. This tradition is a big part of Chinese culture and philosophy. It is very popular in many East Asian and Southeast Asian countries. You can find it in places like Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Singapore. It has even reached countries like Australia, Germany, Ireland, and Wales.

How does this system work for a person? It is based on the year you were born. The twelve animals are the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. These animals are linked to things called Earthly Branches. When you combine these with ten Heavenly Stems, you get a 60-year cycle.

Some people also use animals to represent months, days, or even hours. This means there are many different animal signs for one person. The zodiac can even help people think about jobs or marriage. People use it to see how different signs might get along with each other.

History tells us that this system became official during the Han Dynasty.

Before that time, the way animals were chosen might have been different in different areas. The Han Dynasty helped make the twelve-year cycle a standard way to keep track of time. Some researchers think the zodiac started from ancient animal worship. Others believe it comes from looking at the stars and planets. There are even ideas that the names for the branches came from very old languages. These old words might have come from the Yangtze River region long ago.

There are many wonderful stories about how the zodiac began.

Rat and Ox

One famous tale is called "The Great Race." In this story, the Jade Emperor held a contest to pick the animals. The animals had to cross a river to reach him. The Rat won first place by being very clever. The Rat rode on the back of the Ox to get across quickly. The Ox finished in second place. The Dragon came in fifth because it stopped to help people by bringing rain.

The Pig was the very last animal to arrive in twelfth place.

These stories help explain why animals act the way they do today. In "The Great Race," the Rat pushed the Cat into the water. Because of this, some stories say the Cat is not part of the zodiac. This is also why people say cats and rats are enemies.

Another legend says the twelve animals were chosen by Gautama Buddha. He called them to say goodbye to him before he left the Earth. The zodiac also connects to the Five Elements Theory. This theory helps people understand how things change in the universe. It shows how different signs might interact or work together in life.
