They are usually shaped like reptiles or long snakes. Many dragons have predatory features like claws, wings, scales, or horns. Most stories describe them as intelligent beings. They might even have the power to control natural elements. These creatures often mix traits from different animals. Some look like birds, while others look like mammals.

Because they are so famous, dragons appear in many modern books and movies. Writers like J. R. R. Tolkien and Ursula K. Le Guin have used them in their stories.

Different parts of the world see dragons in very different ways. In Western traditions, dragons are often shown as large, winged monsters. These creatures usually have four legs and can breathe fire. They are sometimes linked to ideas of evil or death.

However, East Asian traditions show a very different view. In China, Japan, and Korea, dragons are often long and serpentine. They might have the head of a camel or the antlers of a stag. These dragons are often seen as kind and helpful. They are frequently linked to the sea, rain, and imperial power.

Many people wonder where these dragon stories first began. Some scholars have different ideas about why we imagine them. Anthropologist David E. Jones suggests it might be an instinct. He thinks humans might have an inherited fear of snakes and large cats. This fear could lead us to create dragon stories.

Other people, like Adrienne Mayor, have different theories. She suggests that finding old fossils might have inspired these tales. For example, seeing dinosaur bones might look like dragon remains. In China, these fossil bones are even called "dragon bones."

Egyptian myths tell of a giant serpent named Apep. Some stories say Apep lived in the underworld and caused eclipses. In Greece, dragons were often large serpents with magical powers. Some were seen as monsters to be defeated by heroes. Others were seen as helpful figures linked to healing and wealth.

The word "dragon" has a long history in the English language. It entered English in the early 13th century from Old French. This word came from the Latin word "draco." The Latin term meant a huge serpent or dragon. The Greek word for it likely comes from a word meaning "I see."

This might refer to the way a snake's eyes always look open. Some think it refers to a "deadly glance." Even though these creatures are not real, they remain very powerful in our imagination. They connect us to the many ways humans have wondered about the world.
