These legends come from many different cultures across Europe. People have written about dragons for a very long time. In ancient times, some writers called them "serpens" or "draco."

This shows that the words might have meant the same thing. Today, we think of them as legendary beasts. They are part of many different myths and folk tales.

Most modern dragons have a very specific look.

They are usually shown as huge, scaly, and horned lizards. Many have leathery wings that look like a bat's wings. Some artists even add feathered wings or colorful crests. You might see them with spikes along their spines. They often have a long and muscular tail too. Some stories say their blood has very special powers. It might help them live longer or act as a poison.

Dragon stories have changed a lot through history.

In the past, many people saw them as giant snakes. The Roman poet Virgil wrote about a large snake. In the Middle Ages, the image began to change. People started combining snake stories with other ideas. They mixed Greek and Roman ideas with Near Eastern ones. This helped create the winged, lizard-like dragon we know. By the 11th to 13th centuries, interest in dragons was very high.

Many legends tell of dragons guarding great wealth.

They are often seen as greedy beasts. Many stay in underground caves or dark lairs. Some dragons protect castles filled with gold and treasure. In the poem Beowulf, a dragon collects valuables. The hero Sigurð also had to face a dragon named Fáfnir. In Greek myths, a dragon named Ladon guarded a special tree. These stories show how dragons are linked to earth and gold.

Different stories show dragons in different ways.

In some tales, a dragon is a scary enemy. Saint George is a famous hero who fought a dragon. Another story tells of a red and white dragon fighting. In these tales, the dragon is often an evil force. However, some stories show dragons as wise or helpful. In Welsh folklore, they can be different from the scary kind. This shows how many ways people imagine these creatures. They remain a big part of our imagination today.
