A wyvern is a type of mythical dragon.

It is different from many other dragons you might know. Most dragons have four legs and two wings. A wyvern usually has only two legs and two wings. It often has a long, pointed tail as well.

While many dragons are famous for breathing fire, wyverns in folklore and heraldry rarely do. This makes them a unique part of the dragon family. They are popular in European stories and modern fantasy games.

There are many ways to describe how a wyvern looks. In the study of heraldry, which is the use of symbols on shields, the wyvern is very common.

Sometimes, a wyvern is shown resting on its legs and tail. Other times, it might be shown with its claws in the air. It might even be shown without any wings at all. A wingless wyvern is sometimes called a lindworm. If it has no legs shown, it is called "sans legs." These different styles allow people to use the creature in many ways.

Ideas about winged snakes have existed for a very long time. Ancient cultures in the Mediterranean and Near East had stories about them. For example, the Egyptian goddess Wadjet was shown as a winged cobra.

In ancient Greece, writers like Herodotus wrote about winged serpents. Later, Roman authors like Ovid described creatures with wings and fiery breath. These old stories likely helped shape the wyvern we recognize today. Over hundreds of years, the idea of a flying snake turned into the dragon-like creature we see in books.

In the Middle Ages, the word "wyver" appeared in official records. One of the earliest uses was in a roll of arms from 1312. For a long time, people used the words "dragon," "wyrm," and "wyver" to mean almost the same thing. It was not until the 16th century that people clearly separated them. Books by writers like Gerard Legh in 1562 helped set these rules. They helped make sure everyone knew a wyvern had two legs while a dragon had four. This distinction is still used in British heraldry today.

Today, you can find the wyvern in many places in your daily life. It is a popular mascot for schools and sports teams in the United Kingdom and the United States.

Some companies even use it as a logo, like the Swiss chocolate maker Lindt. You might see it in video games like Ark: Survival Evolved. It also appears in fantasy books like Fourth Wing. From ancient myths to modern computer games, the wyvern remains a creature that people love to imagine.
