People have imagined these creatures for thousands of years. Many cultures tell stories about heroes who fight these giant snakes. In the ancient Near East, stories feature gods like Marduk fighting the serpent Tiamat. The Hebrew Bible also describes large sea creatures like the Tanninim.

In Norse mythology, a serpent named Jörmungandr was so long that it circled the entire world. These tales show how much people have wondered about the deep, dark ocean.

Throughout history, many people claimed to see these monsters with their own eyes. In 1734, a group near Greenland saw a very bulky beast.

A man named Bing drew a sketch of it. He said the creature had eyes that looked like burning fire. Later, in 1848, a crew on the ship HMS Plumper saw a serpent near Africa. They watched it swim for about twenty minutes. Some crew members thought the creature looked more like a lizard than a snake. These reports caused many debates among people who studied the sea.

Sometimes, people tried to prove these monsters were real by showing physical evidence. In 1845, a man named Albert C. Koch showed a long skeleton in New York City. He claimed it belonged to an extinct sea serpent. However, a scientist named Jeffries Wyman looked at the bones very closely. He discovered the skeleton was not one animal at all. It was actually made of bones from several different creatures, including an extinct whale. This showed that even famous displays could be mistaken.

Scientists today have many ideas about what people actually saw. One idea is that sailors saw giant squid and thought they were serpents. Another theory is that people saw whales caught in fishing gear or debris. These whales might have looked like long snakes as they struggled in the water. Some researchers also think the giant oarfish might be the real inspiration. These fish have very long bodies and swim in wavy patterns. Such movements could easily look like a monster from a distance.

Sea serpents remain a famous part of our stories and imagination. You can find them in books like The Chronicles of Narnia. They also appear in many movies and television shows. Even though we have many scientific answers, the mystery of the ocean keeps these stories alive. People still look at the waves and wonder what might be hiding underneath. The idea of a great sea serpent connects ancient myths to modern curiosity.
