Some sailors feared it could pull down large ships. Scientists think the legend might come from real giant squids. These real animals can grow to be very long. The kraken remains a famous part of sea myths.

How the kraken is described has changed over time. Some early accounts say it has many heads and claws.

These eyes might have been light organs seen in the dark. Some people even thought it looked like a huge whale. The creature's many arms are its most famous feature. This makes it look like a moving part of the sea.

History shows many people have written about the kraken. In 1539, Olaus Magnus drew it on a map. He showed a monster with tentacles near Norway.

Later, Christen Jensøn used the name kraken in 1646. In 1753, the Danish bishop Pontoppidan wrote about it too. He was a famous authority on sea monsters. He described the creature as a massive octopus. These writers helped spread the legend across the world.

There are many interesting facts about the name kraken. The word may come from an old word for a crooked tree.

This might be because the monster's arms look like branches. Some think it relates to a wooden drag used in water. A drag is a tool with hooks used by sailors. In Swedish, the word for octopus is krakar. This shows how the name stayed in the language. Even today, people use the name to describe large sea life.

Today, the kraken is a big part of stories and art.
