The vampire squid is a strange animal from the deep sea.

Its scientific name is Vampyroteuthis infernalis. This name means vampire squid from hell. The name comes from its dark color and its cloak-like skin. It does not actually drink blood like a vampire. Instead, it eats tiny bits of food called detritus. These squids live in the deep, dark parts of the ocean. They stay in areas called the oxygen minimum zone. This is a place with very little oxygen for breathing.

Living with so little oxygen is a hard job. The vampire squid has a special way it works. It has blue blood containing a substance called hemocyanin. This helps it carry oxygen through its body very well. The squid also has gills with a large surface area. Its body is soft and filled with ammonium-rich tissues. This helps it stay floating in the water without much effort. It has very large eyes to see in the dark. These eyes are the largest in the animal kingdom for its size.

Scientists first found these creatures during the Valdivia Expedition. This trip took place between 1898 and 1899. A scientist named Carl Chun led the group. He wanted to see if life lived in the deep sea. He first described the animal as an octopus in 1903. Later, researchers realized it belonged to its own special group. This group is called Vampyromorphida. It is the only living member of this group left today.

These squids have many interesting parts. They have eight arms with a skin webbing between them. This webbing looks like a dark cloak. The arms have rows of fleshy spines called cirri.

They also have two long filaments to catch food. These filaments are tucked away in pouches. The squid is covered in light-producing organs called photophores. These organs can make bright flashes of light. Some flashes can last for several minutes. This light can help the squid hide or scare predators.

If a predator attacks, the squid uses clever tricks. It can curl its arms into a shape called the pumpkin posture. This makes the animal look much larger. It can also shoot out a cloud of glowing mucus. This sticky, blue light can dazzle a hungry fish. This is sometimes called the burglar alarm effect. This light makes the predator easy for other animals to see. This gives the squid a chance to swim away safely.
