Its name comes from its dark color and cloak-like skin. This skin connects its eight arms.

These squids live in a special place. They stay in the oxygen minimum zone. This is a part of the ocean with very little oxygen. Most animals cannot live there. The vampire squid can! It has blue blood. This blood helps it carry oxygen through its body very well.

The vampire squid has very large eyes. They are the largest eyes in the animal kingdom for its size. It also has light-producing organs called photophores. These organs can make bright flashes of light.

If a predator comes near, the squid can hide. It curls its arms around its body. This is called the pumpkin posture. It can also let out a cloud of glowing mucus. This light can dazzle a predator.

To eat, it uses two long filaments. These are like thin threads. They help the squid catch tiny bits of food falling through the water.
