It is a bacterium that can glow in the dark. This glowing is called bioluminescence. This bacterium lives in a special way with the Hawaiian bobtail squid. This is called symbiosis. In symbiosis, two different living things help each other.

The squid has a light organ on its belly. The bacteria live inside this organ. The squid gives the bacteria food and a safe home. In return, the bacteria make light. This light helps the squid hide from predators. It matches the light from the sea surface. This makes the squid hard to see from below. The bacteria use a set of genes called the lux operon to make light. They use a trick called quorum sensing to know when to glow. They wait until there are enough bacteria to make a bright light. Every morning, the squid lets out most of the bacteria. This is called venting. The small amount left behind makes more bacteria for the next night.
