He spent his life studying life in the ocean. Chun worked as a professor at several different universities. He taught at the University of Königsberg starting in 1883. Later, he taught at the University of Breslau in 1891. Finally, he became a professor at the University of Leipzig in 1898. He was a pioneer in ocean research. His work helped people understand the deep, dark parts of the sea.

Chun used special tools to study the ocean.

He wanted to catch animals at very specific depths. In 1887, an engineer named Peterson designed a trap for him. This tool is called the Peterson Closing Net. It allowed Chun to sample water at certain levels. He also studied how some animals move through the water. He described seasonal vertical migration, which is a yearly movement. This happens when creatures move to deeper water for part of the year.

Chun's most famous work was a large sea trip.

In 1897, he proposed a big German deep-sea expedition. He led this trip on a steamship named the SS Valdivia. The ship left Hamburg on August 1, 1898. Chun chose a large team of experts to join him. This team included doctors, chemists, and botanists. They also had an illustrator to draw what they saw. The ship traveled to places like Bouvetøya and the Kerguelen Islands.

There were many important facts from this big expedition.

The SS Valdivia returned to Hamburg on May 1, 1899. The team collected so much information that it filled 24 volumes. These books were published all the way until 1940. More than 70 specialists helped describe the findings. Chun even discovered a new animal called the vampire squid. He also studied how the eyes of certain tiny creatures changed at different depths. This helped him understand how light works under the sea.

Chun wanted everyone to learn about his discoveries.

He wrote a popular book in 1900 about the voyage. This book helped capture the imagination of many people. His work showed that tiny plants live at many different depths. He also studied how some animals move up and down the water. By studying these things, he connected science to the real world. He showed how the ocean is full of life and movement. His studies changed how we see the deep sea.
