Deep-sea community

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Deep-sea communities are groups of living things that share a home in the deep ocean.

For a long time, people thought these areas were empty. They believed the dark and cold water was too hard for life. However, we now know that many different kinds of creatures live there. These communities are very hard to study. It costs a lot of money to visit them. The deep sea is also a very remote place.

Life in the deep sea works in special ways because there is no sunlight. In the top layers, plants use sunlight to make food. This is called photosynthesis. In the deep, dark aphotic zone, plants cannot grow. Instead, animals rely on other sources of energy. Some eat marine snow, which is bits of organic matter drifting down. Others eat whale falls, which are the bodies of whales on the seafloor. Some use chemosynthesis, a way to make food from chemicals. This happens near hydrothermal vents or cold seeps.

Scientists have learned about these places through many great adventures. In the 1870s, Sir Charles Wyville Thomson led the Challenger expedition. His team found many different types of deep-sea creatures. Later, in 1977, scientists J. Corliss and J. van Andel saw clam beds. They used a small underwater vehicle called the DSV Alvin. They found these clams near hydrothermal vents in the eastern Pacific Ocean. This was an unexpected and amazing discovery.

One of the most famous places is the Challenger Deep. It is located in the Mariana Trench near the Mariana Islands.

This is the deepest part of the ocean. In 1960, Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard went to the bottom. They used a vessel named the Trieste. In 1995, a Japanese vehicle called Kaiko also reached the bottom. Later, in 2009, the Nereus vehicle reached a depth of 10,902 meters. This is much deeper than the height of Mount Everest.

The environment in the deep sea is very extreme. The pressure is very high and can crush things. To survive, many fish are small or have jelly-like bodies. They also lack air pockets like swim bladders.

The water is also very cold and stays the same temperature. However, hydrothermal vents can be very hot. Water from a "black smoker" chimney can reach 400 degrees Celsius. This is kept from boiling by the heavy water pressure.
