He noticed that jellyfish and crustaceans would disappear from the upper pelagic layer, which is the open ocean surface. He explained that these animals were actually migrating to depths below 1,000 meters. This was different from diel vertical migration (DVM), which is a movement that happens every single day. While daily migration is well understood, the yearly cycles Chun described are still a subject of study.
