The myths describe a very large and special cosmos. All beings live in Nine Worlds. These worlds are located around a central sacred tree named Yggdrasil.

The gods live in a heavenly realm called Asgard. Humans live in a middle region called Midgard. Many creatures live on the great tree itself. A squirrel named Ratatoskr acts as a messenger there. At the base of the tree, the Norns live. They are female beings who are linked to fate.

Many famous gods appear in these ancient stories. Thor is a very popular thunder god. He uses a mountain-crushing hammer called Mjölnir.

Odin is the leader of the Aesir gods. He is a one-eyed god who seeks great knowledge. He once hung from Yggdrasil for nine days to learn runes. The goddess Freyja is also very important. She wears a feathered cloak and travels to battlefields. Her brother is the god Freyr, who is linked to agriculture.

We know these stories mostly from old written texts. Most of these were created in Iceland during the 13th century. One major source is the Prose Edda. An Icelandic scholar named Snorri Sturluson wrote this book. It was meant to help people write skaldic poetry. Another source is the Poetic Edda. This is a collection of poems from earlier traditions.

People also find clues about these myths in physical objects. Some stories are carved into large stones called runestones.

Archaeologists have found small silver figures and amulets. These items often show gods or special beings. Some people even use these myths in modern culture today. They might see them in books or movies. Others follow these traditions in a modern religious way.
