In Norse mythology, this tool serves two very different roles. It is a powerful weapon used to fight giants. At the same time, it is a divine instrument used to provide blessings. This dual nature makes the hammer a central part of many ancient stories.

Many people wonder what the name actually means. Some linguists think it means "lightning-maker." Others suggest it means "shining lightning weapon." A third idea is that it means "the grinder."

One famous story describes how Thor lost his hammer.

A giant named Þrymr stole it and buried it deep in the ground. He demanded the goddess Freyja as his wife in exchange for its return. To trick the giant, the gods helped Thor dress in bridal clothes. Loki also dressed as a maid to help him. During the wedding feast, the hammer was brought out to sanctify the bride. Thor quickly grabbed the weapon and used it to defeat the giants.

The hammer also shows magic in other tales.

In one story, Thor and Loki stay with a farmer. Thor eats his two goats for their meal. Afterward, he uses Mjölnir to bless the goat skins and bones. The goats come back to life because of this blessing. However, one goat is left with a lame leg. This happened because a boy broke a bone during the meal.

We know about Mjölnir from many old sources.

The Kvinneby amulet from the 11th century mentions Thor and his hammer. There are also two famous collections of poetry from the 13th century. These are called the Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda. These books contain many poems and stories about the hammer. They tell us about Thor's other items, like his iron gloves and his belt.

Throughout history, people have used the hammer as a symbol.

During the Viking Age, people often wore Mjölnir as a pendant around their necks. Archeologists have found many examples of this in the ground. Today, the symbol is still very popular in different media. Some groups, such as followers of modern Heathenry, still wear the hammer as a sign of their faith. It remains a powerful image from the ancient past.
