It is a sacred tree that sits at the center of the cosmos. Many people believe that everything in existence exists around this tree. This includes the Nine Worlds. The tree is very holy to the gods. They go to the tree every single day to hold their meetings.

These meetings are called assemblies where the gods govern.

The tree has a very special way of working. It is supported by three huge roots that grow in different directions. One root reaches toward the heavens to the well named Urðarbrunnr. Another root reaches to a well called Mímisbrunnr, which holds wisdom. The third root reaches to a spring named Hvergelmir.

Three maidens called the Norns live by a holy well. They use water and mud to keep the tree healthy. This work stops the branches from rotting or decaying.

We know about this tree from old books. The Poetic Edda and the Prose Edda tell these stories. These books were written down in the 13th century. A man named Snorri Sturluson wrote the Prose Edda. The tree is also mentioned in poems like Völuspá and Hávamál.

In one story, the god Odin sacrificed himself by hanging from a tree. This story might be why the tree has its name. Some people think the name means "Odin's horse."

Many creatures live inside the tree. An eagle sits on the high branches with much knowledge. A hawk named Veðrfölnir sits between the eagle's eyes. A squirrel named Ratatoskr runs up and down the trunk. He carries messages between the eagle and a dragon named Níðhöggr.

Four stags named Dáinn, Dvalinn, Duneyrr, and Duraþrór also live there. They spend their time eating the leaves of the tree. The tree is said to suffer because of these animals.

Yggdrasil is a famous example of a sacred tree. It shows how people in the past thought about the world. Some scholars study how the nine worlds fit around the tree. They wonder if the worlds are stacked or grouped around it. The tree connects different places like the heavens and the earth. It is a central part of how the Norse saw their universe. Even today, people find these old stories very interesting.
