This is often called a world tree. It acts as a center for the entire universe. Some people call it an axis mundi. This means it is a central pillar that holds everything in place. The tree helps maintain order and harmony in the cosmos. It connects many different layers of existence together.

This tree usually has three main parts. The high treetops reach into the heavens. The middle trunk represents the earth where humans live. The deep roots reach down into the underworld. Each part is linked to a special element. The top is linked to fire. The middle part is linked to earth and soil. The bottom part is linked to water.

Different animals live in different parts of the tree. Large birds often sit in the high branches. An eagle is a very common bird in these stories. Sometimes a mythical winged creature perches at the very top. In the middle, you might find animals like deer or elk. Near the roots, you find creatures from the underworld. These include snakes, frogs, or even dragons. Some stories even mention fish or otters near the roots.

Many specific names for these trees exist in history. In Norse mythology, the famous tree is named Yggdrasil. The Maya people used the ceiba tree as a symbol. In Greek myths, the oak tree was very sacred to Zeus. The Ashvattha is a sacred tree in Hindu mythology. The Chinese have a tree called Jianmu. Many of these ideas may have started in Central Asia. They then spread to many other parts of the world.

These stories connect to how people see the world. The tree can represent a path to wisdom. Some tales say a special fruit or water gives life. It can also be seen as a way to link different realms. In shamanism, the tree is a very important idea. Some people believe the tree helps connect the human world to the divine. It is a way for people to understand their place in a huge universe.
