Many cultures around the world share stories about a cosmic egg.

These myths explain how everything in our universe began. In these tales, an egg often hatches to create the whole world. Sometimes, a special being grows inside the egg first. This being then uses its power to build the universe. Often, the egg is said to rest on dark, ancient waters. The shell of the egg might become the sky. The yolk inside might become the earth we walk on. This idea connects to the idea that eggs give life.

In China, there is a famous story about a being named Pangu. At first, heaven and earth were formless, like a chicken egg. Pangu lived inside this egg for 18,000 years. When the egg finally opened, the light parts rose up to become heaven. The heavy parts sank down to become the earth. In one version from Zhejiang Province, Pangu broke the egg because it was dark and stuffy. The pieces of the shell then turned into the sun, moon, and stars.

Different traditions in India also speak of a cosmic egg. One Vedic myth says an egg rose out of a primordial ocean. Once the egg split, it took one hundred divine years to form heaven and earth. Another text called the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa tells a different story. In that version, the god Prajapati comes out of the egg after just one year. He uses his speech and his breath to create the cosmos. The Rigveda even mentions a golden embryo called the hiraṇyagarbha. This golden embryo sits on high waters as everything else develops.

In West Africa, the Dogon people have a very detailed story. They believe a creator-god named Amma took the form of an egg. This egg was divided into four parts for air, fire, water, and earth. These parts also showed the four main directions. Amma tried to create the world twice. The first attempt was a failure, but the second attempt involved twins. One twin, named Ogo, tried to make his own universe but failed. Eventually, a being named Nommo became the ruler of the universe. Nommo helped bring order to the world and sent spirits to live on earth.

Even in Europe, myths use the egg to explain the world. In Finland, a goddess named Ilmatar helped create six golden eggs. When the shells broke in the sea, the pieces became the sun and moon. The yolk became the sun's bright light. The white part of the egg became the moon. In ancient Greece and Rome, thinkers used the egg as a way to describe the sky and earth. They said the sky was like a shell and the earth was like a yolk. Today, some scientists even use the term "cosmic egg" to talk about the universe.
