Many cultures have stories about a cosmic egg.

These stories explain how the world began. Often, an egg hatches to make the universe. Sometimes, a being comes out of the egg first. This being then makes everything else. In many tales, the egg sits on dark waters. The shell might become the sky. The yolk might become the earth.

In China, a being named Pangu lived in an egg. The egg stayed closed for 18,000 years. When it opened, the light parts rose to make heaven. The heavy parts sank to make the earth.

In India, myths say an egg rose from a great ocean. In one story, the god Prajapati came from the egg. He used his breath and speech to make the world.

In Finland, a goddess and a wind made six golden eggs. When the shells broke in the sea, they made many things. The yolk became the sun. The white part became the moon. The shell pieces made the earth and sky.
