The ouroboros is an ancient symbol of a snake or dragon eating its own tail.

The name comes from Greek words meaning "tail-eating." Many people see this image as a sign of eternal renewal. It can represent the cycle of life, death, and rebirth. Some believe the shedding of a snake's skin shows how souls move on. In some religions, the symbol is also linked to fertility. It is a powerful image that shows how things can loop back on themselves.

This symbol has a very long history. One of the first examples is in the tomb of Tutankhamun from the 14th century BCE.

In Egypt, the serpents may represent a god named Mehen. They show the beginning and the end of time. Later, in Roman times, people used the image on magical charms. A writer named Servius noted that Egyptians used it to show the cycle of a year. It was a way to show how time repeats itself.

Different groups of people have used the ouroboros for their own beliefs. Gnostics saw it as a symbol for the soul of the world.

In alchemy, it is a very famous sign. A drawing from the work of Cleopatra the Alchemist shows the words "the all is one." This image is linked to the search for the philosopher's stone. In Norse myths, a giant serpent named Jörmungandr encircles the entire world.

Even in India, ancient texts compare rituals to a snake biting its tail.

Scientists and thinkers have also found meaning in the symbol. A German chemist named August Kekulé had a famous dream about it.

He saw a snake seizing its own tail while he was dozing. This vision helped him understand the shape of benzene, which is a group of atoms. Other people use the symbol to talk about the huge scales of the universe. It can represent everything from tiny atoms to giant galaxies. It shows how the small and the large are connected in a circle.

In the natural world, you can see this shape in real life. The armadillo girdled lizard uses this pose for protection.

When it feels unsafe, the lizard curls into a ball and bites its tail. This makes it look like a hard, protective shape. In some cultures, the symbol even appears in food. In Spain and Portugal, a type of fish is called "the hake that bites its tail."
