Chinese opera, or Xiqu, is a beautiful way of telling stories through music and movement. It is much more than just singing on a stage. This art form brings together many different skills like dance, martial arts, and acrobatics. Performers even use special make-up and bright costumes to show who their characters are. These colorful details help the audience understand the story quickly. People have cherished these performances for a very long time.

To become a great performer, an actor must work very hard for many years. They do not just learn how to act right away. First, they must learn how to play musical instruments. Next, they practice singing and dancing. Only after they master these things do they begin to study acting. This careful training helps them master specific roles.

The history of this art goes back over a thousand years. Early forms like the Canjun Opera began during the Later Zhao Dynasty. These early plays were often simple and funny. During the Tang dynasty, Emperor Xuanzong even started the "Pear Garden." This was the very first academy to train musicians and dancers. Even today, professionals are sometimes called "Disciples of the Pear Garden."

There are hundreds of different regional styles of Chinese opera today. Peking opera is one of the most famous and is called the "national theatre" of China. Other styles include Kunqu, Yue opera, and Sichuan opera. Each style uses different music or local languages. In the 1950s, there were about 2,000 government-sponsored opera troupes. Today, many of these forms are protected as important cultural treasures.

Face paint is a wonderful way to show a character's personality. The colors used on a face tell the audience if a person is good or bad. For example, a red face shows bravery and loyalty. A black face can mean a person is straightforward or even rude. A white face is used to show someone is tricky or untrustworthy.
