Most fans of this opera are women. Because of this, the shows focus more on feelings than on fighting. You will not see much acrobatic fighting in these plays.

The way the opera is performed is very special.

Most of the actors are women. These actresses often play male roles on stage. To make this work, they use a musical style called Four Gong Pitch. This special pitch helps women sound natural when playing men. An orchestra plays along to help the singers. The orchestra might include a cello or a percussionist. They also use instruments like the erhu, which is a string instrument.

This art form has a very interesting history. It began in 1906 in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province.

Before that, it started as simple story-singing. Farmers used these songs to talk about their daily lives. These songs were called ballads. Later, these performers began to add acting and instruments. In 1906, artists gathered at the house of Chen Wanyuan. They decided to perform a joint production together. This first show was a great success for the community.

Many important things happened as the opera grew. In 1916, it was called Shaoxing Civil Opera. By 1923, Wang Jinshui opened an all-girls opera class. This was a big step for women in the arts. By the 1930s, there were about two hundred female classes in Zhejiang. These classes had about two thousand students. Many women joined these classes to earn a living. This happened after the Wall Street crash of 1929 closed many factories. The opera became a way for women to find work.

Yue opera has changed many times over the years. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, performers added new ideas. They used ideas from Western drama and film. They even used themes from new literature. In the 1950s and 1960s, the opera was very popular. It faced hard times during the Cultural Revolution. However, it became popular again in the 1980s. Today, it is on the national intangible cultural heritage list. It remains a beautiful part of Chinese culture.
