Later, he worked as an assistant to a director named Zheng Zhengqiu. He eventually joined the Lianhua Film Company to direct his own stories. He made films like Spring in the South and Pink Dream in 1932. Cai was also a pioneer in using local dialects. He was the first to make movies in Cantonese and Chaozhou.

His career grew through many different times in history. In 1932, the Japanese attacked, and Cai began making more progressive films. His movie Song of the Fishermen came out in 1934. It was a massive hit in Shanghai and played for 87 days. During the war, he moved to Hong Kong to make Mandarin-language films. He also made an anti-Japanese thriller there. Cai had many important roles after the war ended. He returned to Shanghai and joined the Kunlun Film Company. He helped make the film The Spring River Flows East in 1947. This movie was part of a "Second Golden Age" of cinema. After 1949, he worked on many government tasks for the film industry. He even helped start a group to check movie quality. He also worked to find and help talented new artists.

Cai Chusheng also cared deeply about helping other people. He taught classes to help women learn how to read and write. He wanted to improve the social status of women in China. Later in his life, he faced very hard times. During the Cultural Revolution, he was targeted for his ideas. He was forced to admit mistakes in his writing. Cai died in 1968, but people still honor him today. His childhood home is now a museum in China.
