Cai Chusheng was a highly influential Chinese film director. He lived from January 12, 1906, until July 15, 1968. Cai is remembered for his progressive filmmaking during the 1930s. He was the first Chinese director to win an international award. This honor came from the Moscow International Film Festival for his film, Song of the Fishermen. His work helped shape the identity of Chinese cinema on a global stage. He used movies to address social issues and tell powerful stories.

Cai's journey into art began with a unique education. He attended formal school for only four years. After speaking up against a teacher's behavior, he was home-schooled. During this time, he studied Confucianism, which is a traditional Chinese philosophy. He also practiced the fine arts of calligraphy and painting. These early skills provided a foundation for his visual storytelling. He eventually entered the film industry by working as an assistant. He assisted Zheng Zhengqiu at the Mingxing Film Company.

Cai's career moved through several distinct stages and film companies. He first joined the Lianhua Film Company. There, he directed mainstream films like Spring in the South and Pink Dream in 1932. After the Japanese attack in 1932, his work became more progressive. He began making leftist films that focused on social struggles. Examples include Dawn Over the Metropolis in 1933 and the proto-feminist film New Women in 1934. This film featured the famous actress Ruan Lingyu.

War and migration changed the direction of his life. Cai moved to Hong Kong to help start Mandarin-language cinema. He worked with Situ Huimin to develop this new style. Cai was also a pioneer of dialect cinema. He was the first to make movies in the Cantonese dialect. He also made films in the Chaozhou dialect. When the Japanese took control of Hong Kong, Cai fled to Chongqing. This city served as the wartime capital of China. He joined the government-run Nationalist Central Film Studio there.

After the Second World War, Cai returned to Shanghai. He became a leader in the Lianhua Film Society. This group later became the Kunlun Film Company. In 1947, he co-directed The Spring River Flows East with Zheng Junli. This film was a major success during the "Second Golden Age" of cinema. After the Communist revolution in 1949, his role changed again. He focused on government administrative tasks for the film industry. He also helped form an organization to monitor movie quality and find new talent.

Cai Chusheng's impact reached far beyond the movie screen. He was a dedicated advocate for the social status of women. He spent his free time teaching literacy classes to Chinese women. He wanted to help them improve their ability to read and write. He also spoke out against the press. He wanted to encourage more responsible conduct in the media. His efforts were meant to protect the integrity of social discourse.

In his later years, Cai faced significant hardship. During the Cultural Revolution in the late 1960s, he was targeted for persecution. Like many intellectuals, he was forced to undergo self-criticism. This meant he had to admit to mistakes in his writing. Cai died in 1968. Today, his legacy is preserved in several ways. His ashes are kept at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in Beijing. His childhood home is now a certified historical museum. He is still honored at major events like the 2010 World Expo.
