Yue opera, also known as Shaoxing opera, is a highly popular genre of Chinese opera.

It is celebrated for its elegant, soft, and delicate singing style. This unique musicality makes the genre particularly well-suited for performing romantic love stories. While Peking opera is more popular nationwide, Yue opera holds a massive following in Wu-speaking regions. These areas include Shanghai, southern Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces. It also maintains a significant audience in Hong Kong due to historical migration from Shanghai.

The performance mechanism of Yue opera is distinct due to its gender dynamics. Most performers are women, and these actresses frequently take on male roles. To ensure these performances feel natural, artists use a specific musical pitch called Four Gong Pitch (Sì Gōng Qiāng). This pitch helps female voices effectively portray male characters. The musical accompaniment is provided by an orchestra that can include various instruments.

Musicians might use the erhu, which is a two-stringed bowed instrument, or other huqins. A modern orchestra might also feature a cellist, a yangqin player, and a percussionist. A conductor often guides the ensemble to ensure the singing and music stay synchronized.

Historically, the genre evolved through several distinct stages of development. Before 1906, the foundation of the art was simple story-singing in Sheng County. These early ballads were often based on the everyday conversations of local farmers. The lyrics provided vivid descriptions of daily life in the Jiangnan area. Economic shifts caused by the Second Opium War encouraged farmers to turn this folk art into a source of income. Eventually, performers added simple acting and basic instruments to the music. This transformed the folk songs into a more structured form of entertainment.

The formal beginning of Yue opera is traced to 1906 in Shengzhou.

Oral histories state that artists gathered at the home of Chen Wanyuan during the first month of the lunar year. Instead of performing separate stories, they created a joint production. This first collaborative show was a major success among local residents. Because the music resembled Shange (mountain songs), the troupes were called Small Tunes and Songs Troupes (Xiao Gē Wén Shū Bān). The term "small" highlighted its humble, rural origins compared to more formal, "large" opera styles.

As the art moved into Shanghai, it underwent significant professionalization. In 1916, it was renamed Shaoxing Civil Opera (Shào Xing Wén Xì) to reflect its status as a cultural art piece. Early performances in the city struggled because the singing and banhu fiddle accompaniment were considered underdeveloped. To fix this, performers like Wang Jinshui studied other styles, including Peking opera. In 1923, Wang Jinshui established an all-girls opera class to professionalize female training.

By the early 1930s, this movement had grown immensely. Zhejiang Province hosted approximately 200 female classes with about 2,000 students.

The rise of female-led Yue opera was driven by both social and economic factors. Following the 1929 Wall Street crash, many factories in Shanghai closed. This left many young women looking for new ways to earn a living. Attending an opera class provided a path to employment, often involving three months of acting training. Additionally, the gentle and tender nature of the music was seen as a perfect match for female performers. This synergy helped the genre flourish during the early 20th century.

In more recent history, Yue opera has continued to adapt to new influences. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, performers integrated elements of Western drama, film, and new-style literature. This shifted the focus toward character psychology and a director-centered system of performance. While the genre faced a major setback during the Cultural Revolution, it saw a resurgence in the 1980s. Today, Yue opera is recognized as a part of the national intangible cultural heritage list. It remains a vital expression of regional identity and artistic skill.
