Harm

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Harm is a big idea in law and morality. It is often used as another word for evil. People use it to describe things that are bad. If something causes harm, we call it harmful. If it does not cause harm, it is harmless.

Philosophers spend a lot of time thinking about this. They want to know exactly what counts as harm. Understanding this helps people decide what is right or wrong.

Different thinkers have different ways to explain harm. A philosopher named Bernard Gert had a specific list. He said harm includes things like pain or death. It can also mean disability or mortality. It might mean losing your freedom or losing pleasure. Another thinker, Joel Feinberg, had a different view. He said harm is a setback to a person's interests.

Feinberg split these interests into two different groups. The first group is called welfare interests. These are things like physical health and vigor. They include having a stable body and emotional stability. People also need food, money, and freedom from being forced to do things. The second group is called ulterior interests. These are a person's big goals or dreams. This might include making art or solving a science problem.

Doctors have a very famous rule about harm. It is a Latin phrase: "Primum non nocere." This means "do no harm." This rule is a major part of medical ethics. Some people think it came from Auguste François Chomel. He was a doctor in Paris who lived from 1788 to 1858. However, other books trace the idea back to Thomas Sydenham. He lived much earlier, from 1624 to 1689.

There are also ways to manage harm in the real world. In the UK, doctors group harm into three levels. They use the words mild, moderate, or severe. Severe harm can lead to a permanent disability. There is also a method called harm reduction. This is a way to make bad results less serious. It helps people stay safe even if they cannot stop a certain behavior. By the year 2020, 86 countries had harm reduction programs. These programs help stop the spread of sickness in many places.
