Assault is a term used in the law to describe certain actions. It involves causing physical harm or unwanted contact to another person. In some legal systems, it also means making a person feel afraid of harm. An assault can be a physical act or just a threat. It can happen with or without a weapon. This behavior is considered both a crime and a legal wrong called a tort.

Lawyers often talk about the difference between assault and battery. In traditional common law, these are two separate things. Assault is the threat or the attempt to cause harm. Battery is the actual physical contact that happens. For an act to be battery, it must be volitional. This means the person did it on purpose. An accidental movement, like a leg twitching in sleep, is not battery.

Different parts of the world have different names for these crimes. In the United States, an assault can be a misdemeanor or a felony. England and Wales use terms like common assault or grievous bodily harm. Canada also uses a three-tier system to rank the severity. Some places combine the two terms into one crime called assault and battery. In those places, the word assault covers both threats and physical contact.

Some assaults are much more serious than others. Aggravated assault is a violent crime that involves a threat of injury. This often includes using a deadly weapon. It can also include reckless driving during road rage. These serious crimes can lead to long prison sentences or even death. Laws also make separate charges for specific acts. These include sexual assaults or harming a police officer.

There are certain situations where physical contact is allowed. This is often called consent. People agree to contact during sports like boxing or wrestling. As long as they follow the rules, it is not an assault. Other examples include medical surgery or getting a tattoo. Police officers also have the power to use force to make an arrest. They can also use force to protect property in some places.
