Kidnapping is a serious crime that happens when a person is moved to a new place against their will. This is also called abduction. A person might be taken using force or by making them feel afraid. Sometimes, people are tricked into being held captive through lies or deception. Kidnapping is different from false imprisonment because the person is moved to a different location. In some cases, the act can cause physical harm to the person being taken.

There are many different reasons why people commit this crime. One very common reason is to ask for a ransom. A ransom is a sum of money paid to release a person. Large groups, like criminal gangs or terrorist organizations, often use this to get money. For example, Mexican gangs have made up to $250 million from kidnappings of migrants. In Colombia, armed groups use ransom to act like a local tax system. They use it to punish people who do not pay them.

Some types of kidnapping have very specific names and methods. "Tiger kidnapping" happens when a person is forced to commit a crime, like a robbery. The name comes from how a tiger stalks its prey. There is also "express kidnapping," which is common in parts of Latin America. In this version, the captor takes the person to an ATM to get money quickly. Another type is "virtual kidnapping," which is actually a phone scam. The caller lies and says a loved one is in danger to steal money.

History shows that kidnapping has taken many forms over time. In the 1800s, men were sometimes taken to work on merchant ships. This was called "shanghaiing" or "pressganging," and the workers were not free. Pirates on the high seas have also kidnapped people for many years. In 2009, 661 crewmembers were taken hostage and 12 were kidnapped. Later, in 2018, the IMB Piracy Reporting Centre recorded 141 hostages and 83 kidnappings.

Every country has its own specific laws to handle these crimes. In Australia, kidnapping is a serious offense that can lead to 25 years in prison. Canada has very strict rules, where kidnapping can lead to life in prison. In Mexico, the prison time can be as long as 70 years if someone dies. Pakistan has different laws for kidnapping people from the country or from their guardians. These laws exist to protect people and define how to punish those who break the rules.
