Assault is a word used in law. It describes when someone hurts another person. It can also mean making someone feel scared of harm. Assault can be a threat or a physical act.

Some legal systems use two different words. They use "assault" for a threat. They use "battery" for actual physical contact. Battery must be a purposeful act. It is not an accident, like a leg twitching in sleep. In many places, the two are joined together. They call this "assault and battery."

Assault can be a serious crime. Some types are called aggravated assault. This often involves a weapon. It can lead to long time in prison.

There are some rules about what is okay. People give consent, which means they agree to an act. This happens in sports like boxing. If players follow the rules, the contact is allowed. Police officers can also use force to make an arrest. This is part of their job. Laws help decide what is fair for everyone.
