Scientists need a way to measure the power of an explosion. They use a rule called the TNT equivalent. This rule compares any blast to a fuel named TNT.

One gram of TNT lets out a set amount of power. This amount is 4,184 joules. A joule is a tiny unit of energy. Using TNT makes it easy to compare different events. We can talk about the power of a nuclear bomb. We can also measure the power of a space rock hitting a planet.

Some events are very big. A kiloton is a thousand tons of TNT. A megaton is a million tons of TNT. The Tsar Bomba was a huge test. It had a yield of 50 megatons.

Nature can also be very powerful. The Yellowstone supervolcano has a massive amount of energy. A comet hitting Jupiter is even bigger. The impact of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 was 6 million megatons. This rule helps us see how much power the universe holds.
