TNT is a powerful chemical. Its full name is 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene.

It is used in many ways. People use it in mining and in war. It is also used to help find oil and gas.

TNT is very special because it is stable. This means it does not blow up easily. It does not react to small bumps or rubs. You can even melt it at 80 °C. This lets workers pour it into metal shells.

To make it explode, you need a booster. A booster is a small, strong blast that starts the reaction.

Making TNT takes three steps. First, workers mix toluene with acid. This makes a new part called MNT. Then, they add more acid to make DNT. In the last step, they add even more acid to make TNT.

Working with TNT can be risky. It is poisonous to humans. If it touches your skin, your skin turns bright yellow. Long ago, women who made it were called "canary girls." This is because of the yellow color. TNT also makes waste water. This water can turn pink or red in the sun.
