Robbery

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Robbery is a crime where someone takes things by force. They might also use threats to scare a person. This is different from other types of theft. For example, shoplifting or stealing a car are not robberies. A robbery is a violent crime. This makes it a very serious offense in many places.

There are different kinds of robbery. Armed robbery happens when someone uses a weapon. Aggravated robbery is when a person brings a deadly weapon. Some robberies happen in public places like streets or sidewalks. This is often called a mugging. Another type is carjacking. That is when someone steals a car using force.

Laws about robbery change depending on where you live. In Canada, a person can face life in prison. In the United States, rules can be different in each state. To be a robbery, the theft must happen near the person. The person must also feel they are in danger of harm right then. Even if a person is not truly scared, it is still a robbery if the thief tries to cause fear.
