A home invasion is a type of crime. It happens when someone enters a house while people are inside.

This is different from a regular burglary. In a burglary, a person might just steal things. In a home invasion, the person often intends to use force. They may want to rob or hurt the people in the home. Police think these crimes are very dangerous. This is because a fight can happen between the people in the house and the intruder.

People have used different names for this over time. Long ago, it was called a "hot burglary." The term "home invasion" first appeared in newspapers in 1912. In 1995, a police chief said these crimes were becoming more common. He said they were happening because bank security was getting better.

Laws about home invasions are different in every place. In the United States, some states have special laws for this crime. Other places charge the person for the specific things they did. For example, they might be charged with robbery or other crimes. In many places, people have the right to defend their homes.
